Do you feel stuck in your life or career, but don’t know where to get support?

With so many approaches and services available, how do you know which method is right for you?

Here is a quick guide to help you understand the differences between teaching, counseling, mentoring, consulting, and coaching so you can better understand the differences.

TEACHING involves helping the student develop a skill or knowledge.

COUNSELING involves diagnosing and helping the client deal with past pain and overcome emotional problems.

MENTORING involves being a seasoned, trusted advisor who has gained the knowledge and wisdom overtime. A mentor is a role model on a specific subject matter, and he/she will tell the mentee how to do what he/she has accomplished in the past.

CONSULTING involves providing professional or technical advice, assessing the current situation, and making recommendations. A consultant is an expert on the subject matter, so he/she is able to understand the problem and provide a strategic game plan with detailed solutions. Consultants are usually specialized in a specific area or topic.

COACHING involves maximizing the client’s potential to help the client overcome obstacles in order to reach a future vision. The International Coach Federation (ICF) has defined coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”. Coaching is future-oriented and involves guiding the client to achieve his/her goals. The coach will ask the right questions to spark self-reflection and transformation from within the client.

Coaching Definition = “Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential” (ICF)
